Don’t Forget to Have Fun

All work and no play can lead to burnout.

It’s important to make time for fun. Yesterday we went for a 7-mile hike in a sunny Colorado. It was a beautiful day with perfect weather.

This was the first hike I’ve been on in a little over a month. I’ve been mostly city-bound and spending way too much time indoors working.

The previous workweek had been a particularly challenging one for me. It left me feeling on the verge of burnout and exhaustion. I felt myself reaching my limit. When I think about how long it had been seen I immersed myself in nature I’m not that surprised I felt tense and overworked.

I’ve heard it said that walking in nature could be grounding and serve as a sort of spiritual practice. I have to admit, after the hike, I was in a much better mood than what I started with. I felt connected to myself and felt more compassion for others.

If you find yourself working more than usual and feeling stressed because of it, I want you to remember to make time for doing something fun. I realize that might be challenging with the number of restrictions in place due to the pandemic. But I want you to get creative. Take a walk, learn to play chess, go for a bike ride, or hike. Whatever it is, just make time to take a break and have fun.
