Eat the Frog First

A story about productivity.

Ever heard the phrase “eat the frog first”? It refers to doing the most important, and sometimes the most challenging task first thing in the morning. It could be working out, or it could be a task related to a project that you keep putting off until another day. Whatever it is, it might be helpful if you prioritize making it one of the first things you do on any given day.

Yesterday was one of those moments for me. I have this work project that’s big and requires a lot of prep work in order to complete it successfully. My team and I need to get roughly 30 employees oriented to the new workspace that we moved into last July. Most of these employees have never actually worked in this space due to working virtually because of the pandemic. To execute this project successfully, we have lots of planning and organizing to do.

Despite the importance of the project, sometimes it tough to get started. I find myself being more critical of myself than I would like, and occasionally second-guessing my own ideas. This makes it challenging to gain any momentum.

To keep self-doubt at bay, I committed to eating the frog first thing and doing something every day to move this project forward. The progress I’ve made by doing this now has the project in a good place to where I feel excited about it and confident that my team and I will deliver in a way that creates value for our colleagues.
