Sometimes life can be boiled down to the simple choices we make in our day. I recently had a choice to make that would impact the quality of my day.
It was Sunday morning and I had just gotten home from spending the long Thanksgiving weekend with my girlfriend. We had a “staycation” that gave us a chance to unwind and recharge from the daily grind of working professionals.
After getting home and eating a late breakfast I sat on the couch and looked at my phone for a bit, and suddenly was overcome with a familiar feeling of wanting to chill. The feeling was understandable. It was my final day off before getting back to work on Monday after days away.
The only problem, though, is that I had a list of things that I wanted to accomplish that day. At that moment on the couch something within me told me that if I were to give in to that urge to begin watching TV, I likely wouldn’t do any of the things I set out to do that day. So instead of watching TV, I opened a meditation app on my phone and meditated.
The meditation helped ground me and gave me the burst of energy I needed to get going on my to-do-list. It turned what could have been a very lazy Sunday into a productive one.
The lesson in this story is that we always have a choice. Time is one of those things that we can’t reproduce. Once it’s gone, it’s lost forever. We all have a choice in how we use it. Sometimes rest and relaxation is exactly the thing we need, and the right choice is to give in to that. And other times it’s the opposite. Instead of rest and relaxation, productivity is the best choice.
At the end of the day, it’s about understanding yourself and what’s best for you in any given moment.
