A while back I heard someone say that the secret to having a fulfilling life is doing things that make you feel good about yourself when you’re by yourself. I think there is some truth to that.
Yesterday I was given the opportunity to do something to make me proud of myself. I went for a run in nearly freezing temperature with several inches on snow on the ground.
What made this so meaningful to me was the fact that I went for a run despite every excuse I was giving myself to not do it.
I could have easily spent my time inside, or done something else for my workout. But I really wanted to go for a run.
Just prior to my run the wind outside started picking up to 11 miles per hour. This was the perfect excuse to just skip it.
Instead of skipping it, I changed clothes, got in the car, and drove to the park.
When I pulled up to the park, I immediately knew that I made the right decision. This was evident when I saw other runners in the distance. In that moment, I no longer felt alone. I suddenly felt part of a community of people who were doing hard things despite the circumstances.
The run was challenging, and also therapeutic. I felt like I was doing what I was supposed to be doing in that moment. My body began to sweat and my mind began…
