My Professional and Academic Journey

A non-linear path.

This past year was a big year for me academically and professionally. I made the transition to working in human resources full-time, and I finished my bachelor’s degree in human resource management. The following is a little insight into that journey.

In 2014, I decided that I wanted to go back to school, and finally receive a bachelor’s degree. This was after I dropped out of college in 2002 during my junior year. The decision to go back to school was because I wanted to increase my career options. I was working in manufacturing at the time as an operations manager, and I was having feelings of wanting to do something else. So, I enrolled with CSU Global and started working towards a degree in project management.

What I didn’t anticipate was how difficult it would be to go back to school while working full-time. I also underestimated how challenging online school would be. Another mistake I made was taking a full-time schedule at the beginning. The program I was in was accelerated, which meant that we covered 16 weeks of material in 8 weeks. So, taking 2 classes at a time (a full-time schedule) while working 45–50 hours per week made the workload brutal. It didn’t take long for me to become overwhelmed by everything. This resulted in me dropping both classes and putting my academic journey on hold.
