Overcoming Challenges and Negative Beliefs

If you’re struggling with accepting a new positive belief about yourself, it may help to think about a time in your life when you displayed the qualities you’re struggling to believe about yourself. During a recent therapy session, I was struggling to see myself as courageous. My therapist encouraged me to spend time reflecting on moments in my life where I’ve been courageous. This strategy helped me to get out of a negative mindset the morning of this writing.

I’ve been struggling as a new parent. I haven’t spent much time around newborns in the past, and I honestly wasn’t prepared for the level of sleep deprivation I’ve been experiencing. To help clear my head, I went on a long walk and listened to part of an audiobook about dealing with difficult emotions. Like what my therapist had done, the author of the book encouraged readers to reflect on a time they’ve overcome challenging times in their lives.

After hearing this, I began to think about times in my life when I’ve really struggled. Times, when I felt like the moment I was in, would last forever. I thought about struggles I had as a child, as a teenager navigating middle school, my early twenties when I was a college dropout with few options and little money, and times in my career when I felt lost.
